Hi, I'm Satomi Hofmann. I play the Confidante in Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera. I'm also a singer, musician, arranger, composer, and founding member of the all-female Celtic band Killian's Angels. Breathing. I could talk and talk and talk about breathing. As a singer, of course, I have to be very aware of the physicality of it. A lot of times, when somebody says "Take a deep breath," the tendency is totake that tight, tight breath that's really not expanding the lungs. And what that really means is relaxing the chest, the belly, everything that we tighten up as we're trying to be whatever it is we're expected to be in the world, letting it go and letting those lungs just follow them. But more importantly, I like to think about breath in terms of the breath in the middle of the day, taking that moment, that one minute, five minutes, an hour, all day long, whatever it is you choose, to just stop for a second and do whatever you wanna do. I'm not just talking sleep and not just talking be quiet; I mean play! Play a game, go outside, go for a walk! Take a nap if that makes you happy. But just taking that moment of letting your spirit have a breath. I think that's a really important thing that all of us need to give to ourselves every day.
