Sonny Turner is best known for replacing Tony Williams as lead singer of The Platters. The group had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including four no. 1 hits, and were, for a period of time, the most successful vocal group in the world.
I'm Sonny Turner, lead singer of The Platters, from The Platters, that's right, The Platters that made the hit records. Very proud to talk about how I was inspired, and what inspired me to be a performer, as most of the performers I know came along when they were children, or when they were youngsters, singing in different doo-wop groups, and being inspired to become performers and singers. And I had a mother that was a fabulous gospel singer, that inspired me to continue, how to continue, "Don't give up!" You know, don't give up, persevere. I mean, under stress or strain or disappointment, you don't give up. That's just a lesson in life you learn. Persevering, and that's exactly what I did, and brought me to where I am today. And a full, wonderful life of enjoyment as a performer that I aspired to be. I'm who I was born to be.
