Her name stands for "sweet and lovable", given by the mother of this singer, songwriter, actress, and record label owner. The artist known as Sayonne worked her way through the music and recording industries, landing a successful 2019 hit, "2 Worlds (Remember)". She now has a hot new single, "Hot Sauce", as well as an upcoming album that will be ready in 2020.
Coming from a close-knit family who've supported her dreams through her journey, Sayonne made her singing debut with her hit fusion song and music video "6 (Ignited)". Sayonne is the product of hard-working immigrants, who migrated to the United States from the island of Trinidad and Tobago. In her music video for "6 (Ignited)", she made sure to pay homage to her Caribbean roots and heritage. While in college, Sayonne studied musical theater and after earning her BFA degree, she dove right into stage work on national and regional platforms. Sayonne held starring roles in productions of "Dreamgirls", "Hairspray", and the off-Broadway production of "Little Shop of Horrors".
After years of stage work, Sayonne made the move towards the pop and R&B world in 2017. She went from performing in a regional production of "Sister Act" to launching her own label, 5 Bars Records. Sayonne also has focused on building her social media platforms, where she has several followers. In 2019, Sayonne released the single "2 Worlds (Remember)", of which the video created a splash on music channels nationwide. She also issued the five-song EP "2 Worlds", which earned many downloads on Apple as well as spins on Spotify.
For 2020, Sayonne brings to fans a new EP, with the edgy first single, "Hot Sauce". The singer was inspired by brother Christopher, who serves as his sister's creative/artistic director and sounding board.
"I wanted to write a song to get Chris to dance, and what I had created so far, he flat-out said, 'sorry, I'm not feeling this!' So, I came up with 'Hot Sauce', which shows off a spicy side of my personality. After a short listen, Chris said, 'you've got a hit!"
Three other tracks Sayonne wrote and recorded for the new EP reflects a trilogy of which they have a connection to one another.
Sayonne says, "'Thirsty' is a fun track where I'm tooting my own horn. It shows self-confidence and self-worth, telling the other person that I notice that you like what you see and I know I'm fine. Then there's 'Boyfriend Material', where I let guys know that if you're 'thirsty', that's fine, but I have my checklist of what I'm looking for in a man and don't be mad if you don't pass the grade. Finally, 'Tic-Tac-Toe' is a 'dismissal letter' to all my ex's who want that 'one more chance', and I found the right guy for me."
Recently, Sayonne, along with Double XXposure Founder and President Angelo Ellerbee, has teamed up with the United Kingdom-based Jamma Music — an online platform that brings musicians together with venues and booking agents in Great Britain.
"We have great pride in introducing R&B/Pop artist Sayonne to the UK market," says Ellerbee. "She is an innovator — edgy, yet classic and fashion forward — with extraordinary stage presence that will leave you thirsting for more. I love Sayonne's energy, vocal style and her work ethic to get the job done."
