NEW YORK — Now, more than ever, the United States relies on volunteers investing their time and talent to resolve the most pressing issues of our times, and Americans of all ages are responding to this call to service. The President's Volunteer Service Award (https://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov) recognizes, celebrates, and holds up as role models Americans making a positive impact as engaged and deeply committed volunteers. The award enables community organizations — as certifying and leadership organizations — to amplify their gratitude by joining with the President of the United States to thank their most dedicated volunteers.
Media personality and technology maven Sir Shefik Macauley (known mononymously as Shefik) (https://shefik.info) was honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award from President Joe Biden, for Shefik's charitable and philanthropic work throughout the 2023 fiscal year. This follows the same award from President Joe Biden that Shefik also received for his work throughout the 2022 fiscal year. The award was certified by Citizens Committee to Save Our Children, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in Texas, to help youth learn non-violent ways to co-exist in a multicultural world. A flagship program of the organization is its annual Harambee Dallas Festival, of which Shefik served as the live stream Producer, Director, and Host for multiple years.
Harambee Dallas Festival is a community-based educational and cultural event that was created in the early 1970s, by the founding members of the Harambee Dallas Festival Steering Committee, a group of community-minded citizens who gathered at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center to form a safe and alternative celebration to Halloween. In 2024, the festival celebrates a milestone of 50 years.
"Giving back to others is a reward in and of itself," says Shefik. "As I continue to conceptualize my perception of human dignity, I am compelled to strive by leading by example."
In 2003, the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation launched the President's Volunteer Service Award to recognize the importance of volunteers to America's strength and national identity, and furthermore, to honor the deeply invested volunteers whose service is multiplied through the inspiration they give others.
Today, the program continues as an initiative of AmeriCorps, managed in partnership with Points of Light, an international non-profit organization with the mission to inspire, equip, and mobilize people to take action to change the world.
Shefik is currently celebrating over 25 years in the professional workforce. He began his career as an entertainment publicist. He later expanded his skillset to technology. It is apparent that he is on the cutting edge of multimedia, as he is Executive Producer and Host of the nationally syndicated radio show and internationally distributed video series "Shefik presents Invocation" (https://invocation.co). The radio show has an audience of over one million listeners monthly. Shefik uses this media platform to amplify the voices and acknowledge the thought patterns of people across a variety of ages, ethnicities, occupations, creeds, and belief systems. The radio show is oftentimes aligned with Shefik's various philanthropic endeavors and alliances with non-profit organizations. As of this writing, "Shefik presents Invocation" won a total of 40 industry awards (for audio, video, and website), many of which were awarded at the highest level.
The journey continues right here and everywhere.
