LONDON — On Friday, May 1, 2020, some of the United Kingdom's finest comics gathered online with other users and achieved the world record-breaking title for "the most users to visit a virtual pub", as officiated by Guinness World Records (https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/613478-most-visitors-to-a-virtual-pub/). Listed as an achievement by Crowdfunder (UK) at The Covid Arms, the world record for "the most users to visit a virtual pub" is now set at 6,321. Media personality and philanthropist Shefik (https://shefik.info) was on-hand to actively participate in this amazing achievement, where he was counted amongst the users. He was awarded an official certificate to commemorate his participation.
To be counted towards the world record, users had to buy a "virtual pint". The attempt raised over £32,000 for the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal (https://nationalemergenciestrust.org.uk/coronavirus/), and was an effort to bring people together virtually during the United Kingdom lockdown to support local pubs. An impressive lineup of comedians, including Russell Howard, Rachel Parris, Jason Manford, Suzi Ruffell, Joel Dommett, Lucy Beaumont, Marcus Brigstocke, Jenny Ryan, Nish Kumar, Stephen Bailey, Rachel Fairburn, Mark Watson, Joe Wilkinson, and London Hughes banded together to raise money for the cause, while Kiri Pritchard-McLean hosted the event, under the name The Covid Arms (https://www.comedyatthecovid.co.uk).
The administration for the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal is run by the British Red Cross, on behalf of the National Emergencies Trust. The trust's main aim is to be trusted to work collaboratively, to raise funds fairly and efficiently at a time of a large scale domestic disaster in the United Kingdom. The British Red Cross Society is the United Kingdom body of the worldwide neutral and impartial humanitarian network the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The society was formed in 1870, and is a registered charity with more than 32,500 volunteers and 3,500 staff.
