Black History Month
Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom it is observed in October.

StevedoreCrispus Attucks was a stevedore of African and Native American descent, widely regarded as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre and thus the first American killed in the American Revolution. He became an icon of the anti-slavery movement.

Emmett Till
Icon, Civil Rights MovementEmmett Till was a 14-year-old African-American who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after a white woman said she was offended by him in her family's grocery store. The brutality of his murder and the fact that his killers were acquitted drew attention.

Sojourner Truth
African-American Abolitionist and Women's Rights ActivistSojourner Truth was an African-American abolitionist. She was born into slavery, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom. After going to court to recover her son, in 1828 she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.
