John Howard, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Purchase College, State University of New York. He received his doctorate in sociology from Stanford University and a law degree from Pace University School of Law. Reflecting broad interests, his most recently published books are "Faces in the Mirror: Oscar Micheaux and Spike Lee" (2010) and "The Shifting Wind: The Supreme Court and Civil Rights from Reconstruction to Brown" (1999). Dr. Howard has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and from the American Bar Association. The annual John Howard Lecture on Law and Justice at Purchase College's School of Natural and Social Sciences addresses issues raising questions about the relationship between law and justice.
